If you haven’t already, make sure to read our previous article on generating a CSR request. The CSR is necessary in order to obtain your SSL Certificate.

What is SSL?

First, let’s look at what SSL stands for. It is the abbreviation for Secure Sockets Layer. This is actually a piece of code which enables a web server hosting your website to communicate securely with any web client or browser on the internet. SSL certificates guarantee that the traffic between server and client is secured through the power of encryption.

Whether you’re dealing with sensitive customer data (like payment details) or simply run an online store, it is generally a good practice to purchase an SSL Certificate. This will increase your site’s search engine rankings, boost customer trust and in turn increase potential sales. Another additional benefit is that SSL certificates help prevent data theft when dealing with sensitive information.

How to Install an SSL Certificate in cPanel

1. The first step is to Log-in to your cPanel account >> go to the Security section >> click on SSL/TLS >> then Install and Manage SSL for your site (HTTPS).

2. Secondly, copy and paste the code you received from your Certificate Authority into the Certificate (CRT) text box. Make sure to include the —–BEGIN CERTIFICATE—– header and —–END CERTIFICATE—– footer. The Certificate Authority is the company or provider from whom you requested/purchased the SSL certificate.

3. Next, click on the Autofill by Certificate button and the system will attempt to fetch the domain name and associated private key. You can also do this manually, by selecting your domain from the drop-down menu and fill in the boxes accordingly.

4. If it hasn’t already been filled in automatically, copy and paste the information provided by the Certificate Authority into the according to text box (CA-BUNDLE).

5. Finally, click on Install Certificate and cPanel will install your SSL Certificate onto the server.

How to Generate a Certificate Signing Request (CSR) in cPanel https://chemicloud.com/kb/article/generate-csr-cpanel/ https://chemicloud.com/kb/article/generate-csr-cpanel/#respond Tue, 08 May 2018 06:51:51 +0000 https://chemicloud.com/kb/?post_type=article&p=988 In the following article, we will share some valuable information about how to keep your website secure for your users and potential clients, through the usage of SSL certificates. You will learn how to generate a CSR (Certificate Signing Request) in cPanel, how to use it to obtain an SSL certificate and how to add it to our domain.

What is a CSR and why would I need to generate one?

CSR stands for Certificate Signing Request. This is actually a preliminary step that any website owner must complete in order to obtain an SSL Certificate for their domain. The CSR form contains identification data about the company owning that domain, and other secure cryptographic information. This data is used when you purchase a SSL Certificate.

Now that we know what a CSR is and how it is used, let’s dive in and generate a CSR Request within cPanel and see how to use that certificate in order to activate a SSL Certificate.

1. Log-in to your cPanel account.

2. Scroll down the page until the Security section and click on SSL/TLS.

cPanel > Security > SSL:TLS

3. In the next window, locate Certificate Signing Request (CSR) and click on Generate, view, or delete SSL certificate signing requests link.

4. Complete the form to generate a new CSR for your domain with the data required in each field.

Key: You can either generate a new 2048 bit key or choose an existing one if you have already created a Public/Private Key for your account.

Domains: The name of your domain. You can also include the * wildcard if you want to use SSL for all subdomains/pages associated with your domain. Note that this type of SSL Certificate will cost more than a traditional SSL Certificate.

City, State, and Country are pretty much self-explanatory. You must state where your company is located and registered.

Company Division: most likely IT or any other one will be just fine.

Email: you must provide a valid Email address where your account ownership may be verified.

5. Click on the Generate button to create your CSR. Now you can provide the CSR to the Certificate Authority who will use this to generate and send you the SSL certificate and CA bundle for browser compatibility.

We hope that this has been helpful, so please feel free to let us know by liking or sharing this article!

How to Install Let’s Encrypt SSL in cPanel https://chemicloud.com/kb/article/how-to-install-lets-encrypt-ssl/ https://chemicloud.com/kb/article/how-to-install-lets-encrypt-ssl/#comments Tue, 12 Dec 2017 13:20:57 +0000 https://chemicloud.com/kb/?post_type=article&p=782 In this tutorial, you will learn how to install Let’s Encrypt SSL for one of your domains in a few clicks.

What is Let’s Encrypt?

Let’s Encrypt is a free, automated, and open certificate authority brought to you by the non-profit Internet Security Research Group (ISRG).

Let’s Encrypt SSL Install Requirements

There are a few requirements that your domain should meet so you can install a Let’s Encrypt SSL successfully on it:

1. The domain and its www subdomain should be pointed to your cPanel account’s IP address. Otherwise, the certificate cannot be verified and installed on your domain.

2. By default, when you initiate the installation of a Let’s Encrypt SSL on your primary domain, cPanel will include your parked domains as part of the SSL installation. The SSL installation will fail if you have a parked domain that is not pointed to your cPanel’s IP address. You should point these domains to your cPanel account or temporarily unpark them until the installation completes.

How to install Let’s Encrypt SSL on your domain

This tutorial assumes you’ve already logged in to cPanel.

1) Once you are logged in to cPanel, scroll down the page to the ‘SECURITY’ area. Then click on SSL/TLS Status icon.

2) The next step is to issue a new SSL certificate for the desired domain name. Select one or multiple domains/subdomains, then click ‘Run AutoSSL‘. It will take a few minutes for the SSL Certificate to be issued and installed.

If you see a green padlock next to the domain, it indicates that a valid SSL Certificate is already in place, preventing the issuance of another one.

If the certificate request involves multiple subdomains, it will automatically include a wildcard (*.example.tld).

3) Once you have installed the SSL Certificate, you should redirect visitors to the secure version of your website ( https:// ). Learn how to Redirect HTTP Requests to HTTPS

How to install a wildcard Let’s Encrypt SSL on your domain

1) First you have to create a wildcard subdomain by going into cPanel -> Domains.

2) Create the subdomain by entering *.example.tld (replace example.tld with your domain name) in the domain box and clicking ‘Submit’.

3) Return to the main cPanel dashboard and scroll down to the ‘SECURITY‘ section. Click on the SSL/TLS Status icon. Here, you will see the wildcard subdomain that was created. If the WildCard SSL Certificate was not previously generated and installed by cPanel, it will automatically be done once AutoSSL runs on the entire server, which occurs every 3 hours. Currently, there is no way to manually trigger the WildCard SSL generation.
