The basics of how Nameservers works

Think of name servers as specialized directory assistance operators in the big city of the internet. When you’re trying to find a website, these operators direct your computer to the right part of the city.

Here’s how it works with name servers, using a simple analogy:

  1. You Ask for Directions: You type a website name like “google.com” into your browser. It’s like calling directory assistance to ask for the address of a specific place in the city.
  2. Your Request Goes to a Name Server: Your request first reaches a name server assigned by your internet service. Think of this name server as a specialized operator who knows where all the website “addresses” are stored.
  3. Finding the Specific Operator: This name server might not have the specific address you need, so it refers your request to another name server that specifically manages addresses for the “.com” area of the internet. It’s like being transferred to an operator who specializes in a specific part of town.
  4. Getting the Exact Address: The “.com” name server looks up its records and finds the IP address for “google.com”. This name server is like a local expert who knows every street in the “.com” area.
  5. Directing You There: The name server sends back the IP address to your computer. Now, your computer knows how to reach “google.com”, much like how you’d start your journey after getting an address from directory assistance.

This system ensures that your internet journey to find a website is smooth and quick, just like how city directory assistance helps you navigate to your destination in a big city.

How to Add Internationalised (IDN) Domain Names in cPanel https://chemicloud.com/kb/article/internationalised-idn-domain-names-in-cpanel/ https://chemicloud.com/kb/article/internationalised-idn-domain-names-in-cpanel/#respond Thu, 15 Aug 2019 09:31:27 +0000 https://chemicloud.com/kb/?post_type=ht_kb&p=2435 Internationalised (IDN) Domain Names work by encoding the domain name using a system called Punycode.

When you wish to add an IDN domain in cPanel (parked/addon) or in WHM, you need to convert the domain name into Punycode for the encoded version of the domain name using a Unicode to Punycode Converter tool.

Then when the user enters a URL containing an IDN domain into the web browser, it will convert the IDN domain into Punycode and resolve that domain.

Can I Transfer My Domain if It’s Expired? https://chemicloud.com/kb/article/can-transfer-domain-expired/ https://chemicloud.com/kb/article/can-transfer-domain-expired/#respond Sun, 19 Feb 2017 13:55:19 +0000 https://chemicloud.com/kb/?post_type=article&p=400 According to ICANN’s rules and regulations, expiration or non-renewal of a domain name is not a valid reason for denial of a transfer request. Transferring a  domain to another host once it has expired is only possible while the domain is in the expiry grace period.

You must complete the transfer during its grace period before the domain name falls into “redemption,” which is when the domain name begins its transfer back to the registry for someone else to register it.

The length of the grace period differs by domain name extension.

What Is DNS (Domain Name Server)? https://chemicloud.com/kb/article/dns-domain-name-server/ https://chemicloud.com/kb/article/dns-domain-name-server/#respond Sun, 19 Feb 2017 13:54:05 +0000 https://chemicloud.com/kb/?post_type=article&p=398 DNS (Domain Name System) is a way of making the Internet an easier place for the common man. It’s a way of simplifying the way we use the web in our day to day life. The full explanation would be very complex and we will try to clarify its meaning in a short and concise manner.

Each computer in an IP-network has its own IP-numbers. When searching the web you write addresses with letters instead of numbers and this through the help of DNS. For example, instead of typing an IP-number like 140.90.99.144 on your browser you type in chemicloud.com. This makes it easier using the web and visits various sites. You could say that DNS “translates” whatever you’ve written into an IP-address and the other way around.

What Is Domain Redemption Status? https://chemicloud.com/kb/article/domain-redemption-status/ https://chemicloud.com/kb/article/domain-redemption-status/#comments Sun, 19 Feb 2017 13:53:10 +0000 https://chemicloud.com/kb/?post_type=article&p=396 Domain Redemption occurs when a TLD domain name has passed its expiry date by more than 30 days. The Redemption Period is a 40 day period during which the domain name owner can renew their domain but they need to pay an additional fee called the Redemption Fee if the domain is not renewed during this period it will once again be free for registration.

When the domain expires, your website and mail service will stop functioning, and no changes can be made to the domain.

Redemption Fee costs can vary depending on the extension, contact our support through the control panel for more information.

My Domain Is Registered With Another Provider, How Can I Use It? https://chemicloud.com/kb/article/use-domain-from-another-provider/ https://chemicloud.com/kb/article/use-domain-from-another-provider/#comments Sun, 19 Feb 2017 13:22:06 +0000 https://chemicloud.com/kb/?post_type=article&p=365 If you’re making the switch to ChemiCloud from another hosting company, you can either transfer your domain name to us or just update the nameserver (DNS) entries to link it to your Chemicloud hosting account.

In order to use a domain registered somewhere else with your ChemiCloud hosting account, please follow these steps:

1)  Change the DNS servers for the domain in question at your registrar to the ones for your account. For the specific DNS settings information please reference the Welcome Email you received from ChemiCloud shortly after completing your purchase. Within it will be the exact DNS nameservers that you will need.

2) Allow 24 hours for the DNS changes to propagate and take effect.
