A Fresh New Look

The inception and the total creation of this new website involved over 1200 hours of work from our web development team, who also wrote over 22,000 lines of code. Also, we’d spared no literary expense, the total amount of verbiage on the new website sums up to over 13,000 words. We wanted to bring every detail to our customers to leave no stone unturned.

A single inode usually represents one file, folder, email, or any other object in your storage, even the ones that come with cPanel by default. The number of inodes on your account is equal to the total number of files and folders in your account. 

The changes to our updated plans are listed below, with some before and after looks at how the resources have changed. If you’re an existing ChemiCloud customer, these updates are already available for your plan right now!

PHP 8.0.1 may have been officially released on January 7th, 2021, but we decided to evaluate its integration with cPanel and our infrastructure to ensure it would be 100% compatible and our customers wouldn’t have any troubles. 

We are happy to announce that PHP 8 is now available to all ChemiCloud customers.

Let’s dive into some of the most exciting improvements and new features that will make PHP 8 faster and more reliable.

PHP JIT (Just in Time Compiler)

The new PHP JIT feature is something many, many developers have waited for and is the most acclaimed feature of the PHP update overall.  

The RFC proposal describes JIT as:

“PHP JIT is implemented as an almost independent part of OPcache. It may be enabled/disabled at PHP compile-time and at run-time. When enabled, the native code of PHP files is stored in an additional region of the OPcache shared memory and op_array→opcodes[].handler(s) keep pointers to the entry points of JIT-ed code.”

The JIT – or Just In Time – compiler promises huge performance increases over OPCache for CPU Heavy Applications. If you aren’t using any caching modules on your site, you’re missing out. And for those of you who are using caching, like OPCache, enabling JIT on apps that need a lot of CPU, like WordPress, Magento, and Drupal, should give you a significant performance increase. 

It’s important to keep in mind, JIT is still very new and bug fixes are still rolling out for it, so keep this in mind while using it.

Other Major Improvements and New Features

• Union Types – These extend type declarations (return types, parameters, and class properties) to declare more than one type. They also support false as a special type (for Boolean false), a trait that’s prevalent in legacy code that did not use Exceptions.
• Named Parameters – This release now allows named parameters in function/method calls in addition to traditional positional parameters.  This makes the function/method parameter names part of PHP’s public API. 
• Constructor Properties – A new syntax to declare these class properties right from the class constructor (_construct magic method). In this feature, PHP now supports declaring the visibility of these as public, private, or protected, as well as their type. 
• Attributes – These allow for the declaration of meta-data for functions, classes, properties, and parameters. 
•  match expressions – These are similar to switch blocks, but match blocks provide type-safe comparisons, support a return value, and don’t require break statements to break-out, and they also support multiple matching values. 
• Null safe operator – This provides safety in method/property chaining when the return value or property can be or needs to be null. 
• WeakMaps – this allows you to store and associate arbitrary values for object keys, without preventing the garbage collector from clearing it if the object falls out of scope somewhere else. 

Deprecated Features in PHP 8

We always like to mention deprecated features so our readers are aware and can update their code accordingly: 

• PostgreSQL: Several aliased functions are deprecated
• Deprecate required parameters after optional parameters in function/method signatures
  `ReflectionParameter::getClass())`, `::isArray()`, and `::isCallable()` methods deprecated
• Disabled functions: Reflection and `get_defined_functions()` deprecations
• `libxml_disable_entity_loader` function is deprecated

How to Switch PHP Version to PHP 8 in cPanel

PHP 8  is available for all ChemiCloud customers. Before doing the switch to PHP 8 we strongly recommend you to check the compatibility of your website’s code with the new PHP version. Some web apps, themes, or plugins may not be fully compatible with PHP 8 yet.

You can easily update your PHP version to 7.4, from cPanel, using the PHP Selector by following the steps described below:

1) Log in to your cPanel account.

2) Navigate to the Software section and click on Select PHP Version.

3) Click on the PHP Version drop-down box and select PHP 8 version:

Important Note Re: WordPress 5.6 & PHP 8

WordPress version 5.6 (the latest release) officially supports PHP 7.4. Using PHP 8 with WordPress should be done with caution and it is not recommended at this time to run PHP 8 with your production site. 

While WordPress will run on older versions of PHP, like version 7.2, it is not recommended as PHP 7.2 reached EOL or End Of Life on November 30, 2020, which means it is not receiving any security updates, and using it will expose your site to possible security vulnerabilities. 

PHP version 7.4 will reach the end of life on November 8, 2022, which gives WordPress roughly 2 years to bring it up to date with the new standards introduced in PHP 8. The updates to WordPress should come well before that time, however, knowing how swift the WordPress teams work. 

WordPress has stated that it’s latest release, Simone version 5.6, is beta compatible with PHP 8, but you should use it with caution as it is still possible undiscovered incompatibilities may exist. To quote the WordPress team: 

“WordPress Core aims to be compatible with PHP 8.0 in the 5.6 release (currently scheduled for December 8, 2020).

…Significant effort has been put towards making WordPress 5.6 compatible with PHP 8 on its own, but it is very likely that there are still undiscovered issues remaining.”

Additionally, themes and plugins may not yet be compatible with PHP 8, and using it could introduce further complications with your websites. There are many old PHP functions from PHP version 7.4 and earlier which were removed in PHP 8, which means that themes and plugins which use those functions will break in PHP 8.

PHP 7.4, the next PHP 7 minor release before PHP 8.0, has been released for General Availability as of November 28th, 2019.

Let’s dive into some of the most exciting improvements and new features that will make PHP faster and more reliable.

PHP 7.4 New Features and Deprecations

You’ll find below a full list of new features, updates, and deprecations of several changes and features that should be added to the language with the final release of PHP 7.4.

New Features

• Typed Properties 2.0 – class properties now support type declarations.
• Arrow Functions 2.0 (Short Closures)- Arrow functions provide a shorthand syntax for defining functions with implicit by-value scope binding.
• Limited Return Type Covariance and Argument Type Contravariance
• Unpacking Inside Arrays
• Numeric Literal Separator  –  Numeric literals can contain underscores between digits.
• Weak References – Weak references allow the programmer to retain a reference to an object that does not prevent the object from being destroyed.
• Allow Exceptions from __toString() – Throwing exceptions from __toString() is now permitted. Previously this resulted in a fatal error. Existing recoverable fatal errors in string conversions have been converted to Error exceptions.
• Opcache Preloading – Preloading is the process of loading libraries and frameworks into the OPCache at module initialization.

Deprecations

The following functions/functionalities are deprecated with PHP 7.4:

• The real type
• Magic quotes legacy
• array_key_exists() with objects
• FILTER_SANITIZE_MAGIC_QUOTES filter
• Reflection export() methods
• mb_strrpos() with encoding as 3rd argument
• implode() parameter order mix
• Unbinding $this from non-static closures
• hebrevc() function
• convert_cyr_string() function
• money_format() function
• ezmlm_hash() function
• restore_include_path() function
• allow_url_include ini directive

PHP 7.4 Performance Benchmarks

Phoronix ran some benchmark tests with PHP 7.4 Alpha and conclude that it is slightly faster than PHP 7.3.

The improvements in terms of performance might not be as significant as the update version from 5.6 to 7.0, but they are still present.

How to Switch PHP Version to PHP 7.4

PHP 7.4  is available for all ChemiCloud customers. Before doing the switch to PHP 7.4 we strongly recommend you to check the compatibility of your website’s code with the new PHP version. Some web apps, themes or plugins may not be fully compatible with it yet.

It is important to know that the following PHP extensions are not yet read for PHP 7.4:

• interbase
• ioncube_loader
• mcrypt
• oauth
• phalcon3
• recode
• sourceguardian
• wddx

If your web app or script is currently using the aforementioned PHP extensions, a change to PHP 7.4 is not recommended.

You can easily update your PHP version to 7.4, from cPanel, using the PHP Selector by following the steps described below:

1) Log in to your cPanel account.

2) Navigate to the Software section and click on Select PHP Version

3) Click on the PHP Version drop-down box and select 7.4 PHP version

4) Click on Set as current button to save your PHP version change

That’s it. PHP 7.4 has now been set as the default PHP version for your hosting account.

In case you see any error on your website once you’ve changed the PHP version, please revert back to the previous PHP version which your site was using.

As many are already aware, cPanel recently announced a change to the way they sell their licenses, from a “per server” to a “per account” model, which would turn overall licensing costs from hundreds of dollars into thousands of dollars once all existing licenses will be charged to this new model as of September 1, 2019.

To ensure we can continue to provide you with the same quality of service and a high level of technical support, we had to impose a pricing increase to all our Reseller Hosting plans. This change will mark the first time since our beginning that we have increased reseller service pricing.

For a smooth transition and ease of understanding of the new pricing, we’ve streamlined the following questions and answers:

How does the new cPanel license structure work?

In a few words: any server which is hosting up to 100 cPanel accounts the license will fall into one of their first three licensing tiers, however, once the 100 cPanel accounts cap is reached, all additional cPanel accounts are charged at an additional rate of $0.20 each.

How does the new cPanel license structure affect us?

Based on the circumstances, cPanel has essentially forced our hand in the matter with a 300%+ price increase that directly affects us. Because of this, we had no other choice than to impose a service increase to our Reseller Hosting plans to ensure we can continue to provide the same level of service to our customers.

What would be the new Reseller Hosting Pricing?

Given all of this came at once, we had to impose a limit regarding the number of cPanel accounts that can be created with any of our reseller hosting plans.

cPanel accounts Limits

• Electron – up to 25  40 cPanel accounts
• Fusion – Up to 50 75 cPanel accounts
• Expansion – up to 80 150 cPanel accounts

We will begin updating your pricing starting on August 12, 2019. For those with recurring PayPal subscriptions, you will need to either modify them within your PayPal accounts or recreate a new subscription upon the next invoice.

What action do you need to take about the accounts that are above the cPanel accounts limits?

If you need more cPanel accounts, you will be able to upgrade to a higher Reseller Hosting plan.

Please note that you will need to take action on this matter until August 11, 2019. Otherwise, your Reseller hosting account will be suspended. Once the account is suspended, if no action will be taken until September 1, 2019, the account will be terminated without any possibility of restore.

How is a cPanel account defined?

An account often called a “cPanel user” or “cPanel account” is a standalone account created in WHM that is used by an end-user to log into the cPanel interface to manage their website or email.

How do you check how many cPanel accounts you have?

If you login to your WHM control panel and click List Accounts this will provide a total number of accounts figure, you can then check this against the cPanel account limits chart above.

Do suspended/Inactive accounts count against your allocation?

Yes, all accounts no matter the type or status will count against your allocation so good housekeeping is going to be essential.

How can you host multiple websites within the new cPanel account limits?

The first thing to do is to make sure there are no unwanted accounts within your WHM account and to delete them where possible. If you have multiple websites that can be consolidated under a single cPanel account, as Addon Domains, then this is also the right way of reducing the number of cPanel accounts.

Looking Ahead

At this time, we do not have a replacement for cPanel as we do not feel there is a suitable alternative control panel available at the moment. We will, however, be testing various options for the future.
